Almaz was Empress during an attempted coup by Itidal and some lyons native to Green Ridges. It is stopped, however, by Sarkin the imperial guard, who is given Itidal's old lands and titles after the traitor is executed. Almaz begins to look at Itidal's wife Lostris with suspicion as well, but spares her and her daughter when the two plead ignorance to the usurpation plot.
